COURSE DESCRIPTION: Technology Literacy is a course for sixth graders. This 10 week course will incorporate the use of computers through multimedia projects, graphs, spreadsheets, CAD and presentation software. Emphasis will also be placed on internet safety and the possible negative effects of cyber bullying. We culminate with manufacturing a project in the technology lab.
Unit I – Computer Basics Students will explore the history of computers as well as the different parts of a computer, and how to organize their electronic files.
Unit II – Electronic Communication Students will explore the Internet as a research device as well as how to safely use and evaluate information on the World Wide Web.
Unit III – Software Students will explore word processing using Microsoft Word and Google Docs; spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets; and presentations using Microsoft Power Point and Google Slides.
Unit IV – Graphic Communications Students will explore concepts related to Graphic Communications using Adobe Photoshop.
Unit V – Communicating Design Solutions Students will explore the Communication of Design including the link between computer aided design and the manufacturing of a product, utilizing Auto Desk Invertor Pro and the Technology lab.
CLASS PARTICIPATION: Students are required to participate in class discussions, lab activities, and lab maintenance. They are to come prepared with their agenda book and pencil each day.
Extra help is available after school on Mondays and Tuesdays or as scheduled in advance.
STUDENT CONDUCT: Students must conduct classroom activities in a safe and respectable manner as outlined in the Smithtown School District Code of Conduct.
